SDG20 is a 20 kW silent diesel generator for a building or a site that has to keep working when the mains does not. It stands in its own soundproof canopy and starts on its own when the supply fails.

SDG20 diesel generator: applications and industries

The SDG20 is used in industrial operations, commercial buildings, workshops, construction sites, warehouses, logistics facilities and agricultural settings where a stable backup or independent power supply is required. It supports both single-phase and three-phase equipment, making it suitable for mixed loads such as lighting, pumps, compressors, refrigeration, IT systems and automation infrastructure. The generator is often installed as part of a facility’s emergency power system to maintain operational continuity during outages.

Typical users include manufacturing plants, service providers, farms, and companies that cannot afford downtime due to power interruptions.

It delivers 18 kW / 23 kVA of prime power and 20 kW / 25 kVA of standby power at 230 V and 400 V, 50 Hz, so single-phase and three-phase loads run from the same machine.

The engine is a BAUDOUIN 4M06G25/5, water-cooled, with a prime rating of 23 kW / 29 kVA. More than the generator asks of it, which is why it is not working at its limit when the building is.

The SmartGen 6120 controller runs the start, the transfer and the protection, and reports remotely. The integrated ATS switches the load over by itself, and the oil, water and air heaters keep the engine ready to start in the cold.

What this generator is built for

• It starts by itself. A 20 kW generator is no use if somebody has to start it: the integrated ATS senses the failure, starts the engine and transfers the load, then puts it back when the mains returns.
• Ready in the cold. Oil, water and air heaters with a temperature regulator and an electric water pump: the engine starts at the first turn in January, not at the third.
• Single and three phase. 230 V and 400 V from one machine, with European sockets, so office equipment and machines run from the same generator.
• Water-cooled. An engine with a water circuit holds its temperature through hours of full load, where an air-cooled one is already climbing.
• Quiet enough to stand outside. The soundproof canopy is what makes a generator acceptable behind a building instead of inside a machine room.

How it takes over the supply

1. The generator stands on a level surface with room around the canopy for air and for service.
2. The ATS is wired between the mains and the building’s distribution board.
3. When the mains fails, the controller starts the engine and lets it come up to speed.
4. The ATS transfers the load to the generator; the building runs on 230 V and 400 V as before.
5. When the mains returns, the load is transferred back and the engine runs on for a moment before it stops.

Operation and maintenance

• Fuel. A generator is only as good as its tank. Plan the refuelling for the hours you expect to be without mains, not for a test run.
• Test it under load. A monthly start with no load proves very little. Let it carry the real load for a few minutes.
• Oil and coolant. Check both at every test. A water-cooled engine that loses coolant fails exactly when it is needed.
• The heaters. Leave the oil, water and air heaters powered from the mains, or the cold start they exist for will not happen.
• Air and exhaust. The canopy needs free air in and out. A generator boxed into a corner overheats at full load.
• Service. Follow the engine’s hours, not the calendar. Filters and belts are cheap; a BAUDOUIN that has run dry is not.

Before you order

The price is on this page. A generator is bought for the load it must carry, so check these before you order:

• The load in kW. 18 kW / 23 kVA continuous, 20 kW / 25 kVA as standby. Add the starting current of motors, which is several times their rated power.
• Phases. 230 V and 400 V are both available. Say which of your loads are three-phase.
• Automatic or manual. The ATS is integrated, so the changeover is automatic. It has to be wired into the distribution board by an electrician.
• Where it will stand. 205 × 85 × 115 cm and 750 kg, with air in and out and room to open the canopy for service.
• Cold starts. The oil, water and air heaters need a mains supply at the generator.
• Bigger loads. For a factory or a whole building there is the SDG108 with 108 kW / 135 kVA.
