The Challenge

A mid-sized 3PL in Rotterdam was running a busy carton line with an entry-level automatic strapping machine comparable to the AUTOMA unit. At peaks, cartons queued for strapping, creating bottlenecks and overtime. Management needed to decide whether to add a second low-cost machine or replace the existing one with a higher-end system.

The key decision factors were throughput (straps/min), labour cost per strapped carton, and downtime from handling errors. They compared their existing AUTOMA-style solution with the HIPO ULTRA Auto Strapping Machine to see if the premium investment would pay back quickly.

Product B: AUTOMA Automatic Strapping Machine

The AUTOMA automatic strapping machine delivers up to 28–30 straps/min, using PP strap of 9–12 mm with adjustable tension up to 90 kg. With a table height of 750 mm and a standard 800 × 600 mm arch, it covers most carton formats in the 3PL’s operation.

At a realistic 60% utilisation, the effective speed is about 18 straps/min (30 × 0.6), equating to roughly 10,800 cartons/10‑hour shift for single-strap cartons. Operators frequently paused to clear mis-feeds or rework loose straps, adding hidden labour and causing small but cumulative delays.

With a purchase price of €2,599, AUTOMA looks attractive upfront. However, slower cycle times force the 3PL either to accept longer lead times or to keep an additional operator nearby during peak windows, increasing daily labour costs.

Product A: HIPO ULTRA Auto Strapping Machine

The HIPO ULTRA Auto Strapping Machine steps up to approximately 72–75 cycles/min, more than doubling the throughput of the AUTOMA unit. With PLC control, brushless DC motors, and automatic strap feeding, it maintains stable performance even on long shifts with frequent SKU changes.

At 60% practical utilisation, HIPO ULTRA runs at about 43 straps/min (72 × 0.6), giving around 25,800–27,000 cartons/10‑hour shift for single-strap cartons. Consistent bottom hot-melt sealing with ≥ 90% adhesion and accurate positioning (≤ 2 mm deviation) cuts rework and product handling damage.

The worktable height of 850 mm and standard 650 × 500 mm arch match the 3PL’s carton range while keeping ergonomics in check. At a price of €3,799, the HIPO ULTRA is more expensive than AUTOMA, but its speed and automation reduce labour intensity and overtime.

ROI & Value Analysis

Assumptions:
10‑hour shift, one strap per carton, labour cost €25/hour, one operator per line.

Product B Performance:

Product A Performance:

HIPO ULTRA therefore processes ≈15,000 more cartons/day on the same shift length, or allows the 3PL to run the same volume in a much shorter window, cutting overtime.

Investment Comparison:
Product B price (AUTOMA): €2,599
Product A price (HIPO ULTRA): €3,799
Price difference: €1,200
Conservative daily savings with Product A (removed helper + fewer errors): €80–€100/day
Payback on price difference: under 4 months even at moderate volumes; faster for high-volume peaks.

Verdict

Choose Product B if your budget is strictly under €3,000 and your line processes fewer than 5,000 cartons/day with no expectation of growth or peak-season surges.

Choose Product A if you run a busy 3PL or logistics operation where throughput, stable automation, and lower labour cost per carton matter. For any line regularly exceeding 8,000–10,000 cartons/day, the HIPO ULTRA’s higher speed, brushless motor reliability, and reduced rework make it the superior long-term investment.

“After switching to the HIPO ULTRA, we cleared our afternoon bottleneck, removed one peak-time helper, and still have capacity to grow. The machine paid for itself in just a few months.” — Marko Jansen, Operations Manager, DeltaLog 3PL / Rotterdam, NL
