The Challenge

A 3-shift e‑commerce logistics hub in Rotterdam was using a mid-range HSM V-Press 610 eco to compact mixed cardboard and film from cross-dock operations. With parcel volumes growing, operators were spending too much time tying off light bales, swapping pallets, and moving them to the dock.

Management evaluated staying with the 100 kg baler versus upgrading to the industrial-duty HSM V-Press 818 plus, which offers 200 kg bales and a 4 kW drive. The key decision factors were operator handling time per tonne, 3‑shift durability, floor space, and payback on the higher investment.

Product B: HSM V-Press 610 eco

The HSM V-Press 610 eco delivers a pressing force of 120 kN and produces bales up to 100 kg at 800 x 600 x 600 mm. With a 3 kW motor and a compact footprint of 1.2 x 0.8 m, it is well suited for small to medium volumes close to the waste source.

In practice, the site averaged 4 bales/hour across three shifts (midpoint of the 3–6 bales/h rating), giving roughly 72 bales/day at 60% capacity. That equals about 7.2 tonnes/day of compacted material, but required frequent bale tying, pallet changes, and transport runs, driving up labor minutes per tonne.

While purchase price around €9,299 kept capex low, the mid-range design meant more handling cycles and less efficient use of operators in a 24/7 environment.

Product A: HSM V-Press 818 plus

The HSM V-Press 818 plus increases pressing force to 185 kN (around 18.5 tons) and doubles bale weight to up to 200 kg at 1200 x 780 x 700 mm. Driven by a robust 4 kW industrial motor, it is designed for continuous 3‑shift operation with mixed cardboard, film, and light plastics.

At 60% of its practical capacity, the hub comfortably achieved 3 bales/hour of 200 kg, equivalent to 36 bales/day and again about 7.2 tonnes/day. The same tonnage was processed with half the number of bales, cutting tying, pallet swaps, and bale moves by more than 50%.

The advanced TorsionControlSystem, larger filling opening (1195 x 540 mm), and higher loading height of 958 mm made loading faster and reduced misfeeds. At a price of around €13,499, it is the premium option, but tailored for high-duty logistics applications.

ROI & Value Analysis

Product B Performance:

Product A Performance:

The 818 plus processes the same tonnage with 36 fewer bales/day, saving about 1.8 labor hours/day or €45/day. Over a 5‑day week this is roughly €225/week, or about €11,700/year in labor alone.

Investment Comparison:
Product B price: €9,299
Product A price: €13,499
Price difference: €4,200
Daily savings with Product A: €45/day
Payback on price difference: under 4 months (≈94 operating days)

Verdict

Choose Product B if your budget is strictly under €10,000 and your site runs at low volume (below 3 tonnes/day) with only one shift and limited power or space.

Choose Product A if you run 2–3 shifts, generate over 3 tonnes/day of cardboard and film, and want to reduce operator handling time per tonne by more than 50% while keeping a compact footprint. In most logistics and distribution hubs, the HSM V-Press 818 plus pays back its premium within months and then continues to deliver labor and throughput savings year after year.

“Switching from the 610 eco to the 818 plus halved our bale handling and freed almost two operator hours every day. The higher bale weight and industrial drive make it the right fit for our 3‑shift operation.” — Martin de Vries, Operations Manager, RijnPort Logistics / Rotterdam
