ST-210S-H2 inkjet printer for packaging

ST-210S-H2 is an inkjet printer for packaging with two print heads. Joined together they print one block up to 25.4 mm tall; used apart they mark two places on the package, or two lines running side by side.

Each head prints at up to 600 × 600 DPI, and the printer keeps up with a line at 406 m/min at 90 DPI. Between the heads and the goods there is 1 to 5 mm and nothing else.

The 7-inch colour touch screen runs embedded Linux in more than 40 languages. It holds more than twenty independent counters and prints text, dates, shift marks, serial numbers, barcodes, QR codes and fields from a database.

The housing is aviation-grade aluminium, the controller measures 202 × 119 × 61.2 mm and each print head 112 × 79 × 103 mm. Power comes from a 100–240 V adapter, and the printer carries the RoHS, CE and FCC marks.

What the second head gives you

• A block twice as tall. Two heads stitched together print 25.4 mm, which takes an address block, a large batch code or a code a forklift driver can read.
• Or two places at once. The heads work independently, so one marks the top of the box and the other the side, in one pass.
• 600 DPI on both. Small DataMatrix codes, fine text and logos stay readable even on coated carton.
• It keeps up with the line. 406 m/min at 90 DPI, and 60 m/min at the full 600 DPI.
• A network port. USB, RS232 and a TCP/IP network port, so the texts can come from the system that already holds the order data.
• One controller. Both heads hang on the same controller and the same screen, so there is one machine to set and one to service.

How the printer works on the line

1. Mount the controller beside the conveyor and both heads over it, 1 to 5 mm from the goods, and earth the machine.
2. Decide whether the heads print one tall block or two separate marks, and set it on the screen.
3. Put the photo eye where the package is detected and, on a line whose speed changes, add the encoder.
4. Write the text on the screen or send it over the network, and set the print height and the resolution.
5. Start the line: every package that passes the photo eye is marked as it goes by.

Settings and maintenance

• One block or two marks. Joined heads print 25.4 mm; independent heads print two places. This is the first thing to set, because it decides where the heads are mounted.
• Resolution and speed. 406 m/min at 90 DPI down to 60 m/min at 600 DPI. Set the lowest resolution at which the code still scans.
• Distance. 1 to 5 mm from the surface, and the guide plate 0.5 to 2.5 mm from the goods so nothing can hit a nozzle.
• Mounting. The bracket must not stand where it vibrates, and both heads must sit at the same distance, or one print comes out lighter than the other.
• Cartridges. Two heads mean two cartridges. Insert and remove them at an angle, and never pull one out while the printer is printing.
• Power and dust. Do not share the socket with other machines, a UPS is recommended, and keep the printer out of dust.

The price is on this page. A printer for packaging is bought for the code and the line, so check these before you order:

• Code height. Up to 25.4 mm with both heads. If 12.7 mm is enough, ST-210S-H1 has one head and costs less.
• One place or two. The heads can mark the top and the side of the same package, which is what decides how they are mounted.
• Line speed. 406 m/min at 90 DPI. At 600 DPI the line runs at up to 60 m/min.
• Surface. Carton, plastic, metal, glass, cable, stone, electronic components and auto parts. The ink is chosen for the surface.
• Data. Say whether the texts come from the screen or from your system: the printer has a network port, USB and RS232.
• Ink. Two heads use two cartridges, so count the ink for both when you plan the running cost.
